Scotland, the northernmost region of the United Kingdom, is a beautiful place, with diverse, rugged scenery and wonderful castles. One of our best friends has been there many times. We began our yearlong travels in Europe in 2008 by attending his wedding in Edinburgh Castle. We would have loved to stay longer, but the January temperatures were too cold for our backpacking wardrobe, so this was just a brief stop.

Did you know?
Edinburgh is home to some of the world’s oldest “skyscrapers” (10-storey apartment buildings dating from the 17th century) and to the world’s only knighted penguin (Sir Nils Olav in the Edinburgh Zoo).
