Honduras

Although Honduras has a violent reputation now, it was fairly quiet and safe when we were there in 2009, at the end of our Central American trip. We traveled in the western and northern parts of the country, where we saw perhaps the best Mayan ruins on the planet, made friends with tropical birds, stayed on a ranch and coffee farm, and snorkeled beautiful coral reefs.

When we visited

March to April 2009

Major stops

Copan Ruinas, Gracias a Dios, La Ceiba, Roatan (West Bay), Utila

Memorable Moment

Swimming with dolphins and snorkeling the amazing West Bay wall on Roatan Island

Did you know?

Honduras was the original “banana republic.” U.S. writer O. Henry coined the term in 1901 to describe the country’s politics and economy, which were dominated by big international companies that exported bananas.
