Think of this small, flat country on the northwestern coast of mainland Europe and you’re apt to think of traditional canal houses, old windmills, and paintings by such masters as Vermeer and Van Gogh. During our visit in 2015, we enjoyed all of those historical things. But we also got a taste of contemporary life in the Netherlands’ second-largest city, Rotterdam, with its culturally diverse population and fun modern architecture.
