What Will Be Different This Time

The last time we were full-time travelers, in 2008 and 2009, the world was a very different place. The only way we could look something up online was to find an Internet cafe and pay hourly rates for dubious computers. Emails typed hurriedly on those computers were our best way to keep up with family and friends.

Making a phone call often required buying a card in a drug store or tobacconist and then typing a long code into a pay phone. If we saw a useful map on the wall of a town’s tourist office, we took a photo of it to look at later, so we could find our way around.

The map of Nebaj, Guatemala, we used in 2009 (painted on a signboard) versus the map we could use today!

What a difference five years make! In the age of wifi, smartphones, Skype, and Facebook, getting travel information as we go along will be much easier. Plus, we’ll be able to keep up our freelance editing work to help fund our travels.

Best of all, we’ll be able to stay more connected with the people we love back home, to see what’s going on in their lives and share what we see and experience. As the world gets smaller and smaller, being on the other side of it doesn’t feel quite so far away.
