The Slow Road
Two Women Wandering the World
Chris meets some of the inhabitants of the Macaw Mountain Bird Sanctuary near Copan
The sanctuary cares for birds (such as this mealy Amazon parrot) that have been injured or were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade
A mealy Amazon parrot
A keel-billed toucan, like the ones we saw wild in Belize and Guatemala
A scarlet macaw, the national bird of Honduras
Blue and yellow macaws
Melissa getting her turn with some residents at the sanctuary's "interactive center"
The birds were heavy to hold, but their talons weren't as sharp as we'd expected
A white-fronted Amazon parrot
A yellow-crowned Amazon parrot
A collared aracari (another bird we saw in the wild in Belize)
A great green macaw and a scarlet macaw
A ferruginous pygmy owl
In addition to Macaw Mountain, we visited a small mariposario (butterfly garden) in Copan
These large butterflies are known as "owl eyes" for the large false eye in their camouflage pattern, designed to scare off predators
