Sunset over West Bay on the Honduran island of Roatan, which we visited in 2009 and again on our honeymoon in 2010

The beachside pool at Infinity Bay Resort on West Bay Beach, one of the best swimming and snorkeling beaches we've ever seen

Where the water changes color is the start of the wonderful West Bay wall coral reef

A kitten who befriended us on a rainy day at the Carambola Botanical Gardens near Sandy Bay on Roatan

The kitten must live at the gardens. because it trotted ahead leading us along the trails (and cuddled up when we took shelter on a covered bench)

As an early birthday present, Melissa got to meet, and later swim with, the resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at Anthony's Key

A naturalist at Anthony's Key Resort introduces visitors to one of the resident dolphins

The bay at Anthony's Key, a pretty resort with over-water bungalows that were out of our price range

Pretty little Half Moon Bay in the town of West End, where we stayed on our first visit to Roatan

Roatan is becoming popular with North American expats and snow birds, so housing developments on the island are increasing

We saw lots of hummingbirds on Roatan

Workers from mainland Central America on Roatan going home at the end of the day

We also visited Utila, one of Roatan's smaller neighbors in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Our home on Utila was the Lighthouse Hotel, on the edge of Utila's only town.

The Lighthouse Hotel is wonderfully breezy, with verandas on all sides, hammocks, and views over Utila's harbor

We could watch pelicans, herons, and other water birds from our veranda
