Chiang Mai Cafes
February 2015
The neighborhood where we stayed in Chiang Mai, Nimmanhaemin Road, is full of trendy cafes and shops crowded with local university students and Asian tourists. One thing they all love doing is taking pictures of themselves with the many silly statues that are set up in front of shops and restaurants to lure the selfie crowd. For fun one day, we made our own tour of the local selfie spots. (We even got Chris’s traveling stuffed penguin into the act.) Of all the fanciful cafes in Chiang Mai, though, our favorite was the one with free-roaming outerspace-themed cats.
Some friendly folks posed for Melissa as she walked along our street taking pictures of the many cafes
The bubbles on the window glass make it look like balmy Chiang Mai was snowy
Every self-respecting cafe or shop has something in front that you can take your photo with
We couldn't decide whether the name of this souvenir shop was intentional or an unfortunate combination of English words
Either way, there was a spot for a photo op
Chris's stuffed penguin, Pingu, even found a perfect cafe for a photo op
It was nice to know how far we were from one of our other favorite travel destinations, Guatemala
No mistaking what this shop was selling!
The center of this menu is devoted to Chiang Mai's latest craze, toast
Chocolate-covered toast on the left, and who knows what on the right (we weren't brave enough to try it!)
It's hard to imagine Americans thinking a slab of white bread with whipped cream and honey is an awesome dessert
And with ice cream! Toast, the best thing since sliced bread.
This reastaurant across the street from our apartment is devoted to another novelty in Chiang Mai, green salads
This Western-themed restaurant boasted dining teepees in its back yard
A wonderful cafe and work space (located in a mall) where we and the local university students went to get our work done
It felt like a great college library study space (the name is short for Creative and Meeting Place)
Our very favorite cafe was Chiang Mai's cat cafe, where felines had free run of the place
The cat cafe and its residents' names have a space theme (because having cats isn't theme enough, apparently)
This beautiful bengal sat near us for a while
