During Cambodia’s dry season, the village of Kompong Khleang has a dirt road running down the middle and canals on either side, leading to the Tonle Sap lake. Like other villages, it’s surrounded by farm fields and forest. During the wet season, however, the lake swells sixfold in size, flooding the fields and trees, covering the road, and turning the entire village into one big canal. To cope with the changing water levels, some villagers build their homes high on stilts, while others live in houses that float on empty oil drums. For all of them, daily life takes place over the water, and boats become the only way to get around.
