The Slow Road
Two Women Wandering the World
Chickens (often fighting cocks) in this type of bamboo cage are a common sight in Balinese towns
Although some gas stations exist, most petrol (especially for motorbikes) is sold in used bottles at small shops
The most elaborate house gate we saw in Ubud (we never found out who it belonged to)
An especially imposing wall carving
A gate guardian
A water temple dedicated to Saraswati, goddess of wisdom and the arts
Lotus flowers at the water temple
Ubud is bisected by several deep ravines; the high walkway on the left leads to a restaurant
The other side of the ravine
Employees of the Puri Lukisan art museum make decorations for the opening gala for a new exhibition
This statue by an artist from Ubud was placed in a fig tree at the Puri Lukisan museum many years ago; it has since been surrounded by the tree.
Behind the Puri Lukisan museum, we followed a footpath to the rice fields that surround Ubud (our first view of rice fields in Asia!)
The plastic bags on poles are meant to scare away birds
Rice is grown on terraces of different heights so water can flow from one field to the next
More carvings from around Ubud
Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god who is the remover of obstacles, is popular in Ubud
Balinese textiles from the Threads of Life textile museum
Different batiks
Chris loved this carving for sale at the textile museum
A display of the dying process at the textile museum
Kites are also popular in Ubud (as elsewhere in Bali)
A woodcarver working on a mask at his small shop in Ubud
This shop is the size of a large closet
We also saw a man who makes folding books in the traditional Balinese style on a type of palm leaf that is very hard and durable
Each leaf of the book is only a couple of inches high, so drawing one is like being a painter of miniatures
A woman carries the kind of palm leaves used to weave offering baskets
We took a class in how to make typical Balinese offerings and decorations from palm leaves
