Jatiluwah
September 2004On our way from Candikuning back to Ubud, we paid a driver to take us on a day of sightseeing through some of the most scenic rice fields in Bali, those around the village of Jatiluwih. Those fields and the subak system they use---an irrigation management system unique to Bali that dates back to the 11th century---have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. (We love those; if we're within 50 kilometers of a UNESCO World Heritage site, we always try to see it.) Our driving tour also included a visit to an old and much-revered temple on the slopes of misty Mount Batukau called Pura Luhur Batukau.
